To Serve God and Wal-Mart is absolutely essential reading for people on the left. It explains how the right made free markets common sense for so many Americans AND explains why the Christian Right demonized homosexuality and abortion starting in the 1970s--before that other "sins" were more to the fore in their cosmology. Moreton connects all of the dots and I felt like I really learned something. She has a lovely and extremely vivid prose style and spent a lot of years in the Ozarks and in Central America, so the story is fascinating and fun to read.

I have long contended that the America populace is essentially conservative. I don't specifically refer to the arch-evangelical right which either panics, screams, or pontificates, but those whose essential beliefs strive to maintain values which, many believe, ought not change. This is not a conservative ideology but a quieter modus operandi. As (or though) a progressive, I respect that, rather than thumb my nose at such a massive group of fellow countrymen. This conservatism knows no color or creed. So, I find this article to be quite enlightening and is well written.

I haven't thought about this idea before, but it does make sense. Now, small town America and rural areas are turning to dollar stores as a way to break Wal-Mart monopoly.
