I love the "real" quarter moment! Yeah, U.S. arrogance is pretty pernicious and unconscious. I've done stuff like that unthinkingly a billion times. Really sad.

Would have been nice if Zizek had mentioned something about race, maybe... But maybe that's not the Slovakian shtick.

I am a graduate student in religious studies, and this AAR meeting was my first. It was great to meet other religion geeks, and ones that get paid too (relative to my status, of course).

I was standing outside the lecture theatre near the end of James Cone's speech, which I found to be quite amusing due to his voice. Also standing near my colleague and I was Zizek, who had quite the look on his face. My colleague said to me "Look, Zizek has just got off his plane from Europe, and to his horror, has walked into a Baptist revival meeting!" A memory I will cherish for years to come...

Altizer seemed like he was preaching a sermon of some sort. If I hadn't read some of his work, I don't think I'd have any idea what he said except "God, Blake, Hegel" over and over again.

Helping Americans in Montreal was amusing. I am Canadian, my mother from Montreal, though my French skills are not the best. Still, it amused me how bewildered some Americans could be. Others had absolutely no problem and seemed to enjoy reading French signs and seeing the relish with which people smoke in that city (something I myself enjoy seeing, despite not particularly liking cigarettes).

At one point I asked a few folks for a quarter for the pay phone. They asked me if I wanted a "real" quarter or a Canadian one. I reacted with mock offense. It amuses me that someone would make a comment like that.
