Lofro the Pirate Hearts Sweet Heaven

Killing the Buddha contributor Eric Scott, aka @lofrothepirate, “a voice for 2nd gen paganism” — and for general all-around wit, empathy, and telling detail — tweets his review of Killing the Buddha mothball Jeff Sharlet’s new book, Sweet Heaven When I Die: Faith, Faithlessness, and the Country In Between. You catch that trick? They’re both involved with Killing the Buddha. So it’s not like this review is “objective,” or anything. But it sure is nice. And isn’t that what matters?

In short: THE FAMILY and C-STREET made me admire his reporting. I still say those books should be read by all humans.

SWEET HEAVEN is different. The subjects of the essays tend to be, well, quieter than the subjects of the two previous books.

And while the subjects may not make the world tremble to the same degree, they are rich, fascinating, worth your time and contemplation.

I particularly recommend “Sweet Fuck All, Colorado,” “She Said Yes,” and “Born, Again.” (The last has the best title drop in recent memory.)
