Tea Party and McCarthyism Mashup Quiz

Over at The Revealer I asked if Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are ushering in McCarthyism 2.0. As a way of exploring this question further, I propose a guessing game. See if you can figure out which quotes were said by Senator Joseph McCarthy, Glenn Beck, or Sarah Palin:

  1. We Americans live in a free world, a world where we can stand as individuals, where we can go to the church of our own choice and worship God as we please, each in his own fashion, where we can freely speak our opinions on any subject, or on any man.
  2. It is so humbling to get to be here with you today, patriots—you who are motivated and engaged and concerned, knowing to never retreat. I must assume that you too know that we must not fundamentally transform America as some would want.
  3. Now, I make no claim to leadership. In complete humility, I do ask you and every American who loves this country to join with me.
  4. It’s not politicizing our security to discuss our concerns because Americans deserve to know the truth about the threats that we face and what the administration is or isn’t doing about them.
  5. The people who are trying to destroy our country through lies and force are not enemies of yours or mine. They are enemies of the freedom of man. The ultimate truth that man is meant to be free and govern himself; that all those rights come from God, not from government.
  6. Christianity, which has been in existence for 2,000 years, has not converted, convinced nearly as many people as this Communist brutalitarianism has enslaved in 106 years, and they are not going to stop.
  7. They actually want you to believe that this nation was not built on faith by men of good character. They want you to believe a nation can survive without faith, character and integrity.
  8. We are now the keepers of an honorable tradition of conservative values and good works. And we must never forget that it is a sacred trust to carry these ideas forward. It demands civility and it requires decent constructive issue-oriented debate.
  9. Do we have communists and revolutionaries and socialists around the president and the White House? The real question that we should have been asking from the very beginning is: Does it matter that we have communists in and around the White House? Because we already know the answer now to the first one and it is yes.
  10. With Russia wanting to control a vital pipeline in the Caucasus, and to divide and intimidate our European allies by using energy as a weapon, we cannot leave ourselves at the mercy of foreign suppliers.
  11. This religion of immoralism, if the Red half of the world triumphs—and well it may, gentlemen—this religion of immoralism will more deeply wound and damage mankind than any conceivable economic or political system.
  12. I have firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, because God was instrumental in putting this country together. And remember, we changed the world.

But while we’re all distracted playing these guessing games, Jeff Sharlet reminds us in C Street that  fundamentalism sells, but only if it’s low-class, the purview of sweaty Southern men in too-tight suits pounding pulpits and thumping Bibles. C Street—a distinguished address, an upscale clientele, an internationalist perspective—simply did not register.

And therein lies the real horror story—the populists’ Tea Parties represent easy targets one can attack as a means to enhance one’s political profile and donor base. But what will it take for religious and political voices to unite and demand an end to the National Prayer Breakfast and other Family-friendly activities that serve up a Capitalist Christ that’s far more deadly than any dish ever concocted by the Fox News team or the junior senator from Wisconsin.
