Recently unearthed: my religion notebook from third grade. My husband left it on top of my desk with a note attached that said “This explains a lot.” Here’s just a sample: The Parable of the Dancing. In it, we see hints of my later struggles with my behavior. Don’t do bad things, Future Mary, I’m telling myself. Oh! If only I had listened! P.S. Check out the penmanship.

One night John Travolta was at a disco. He wanted to find a dancing partner. He looked and found everybody smoking except one. He took her to a better disco and the police came to the other disco and saw the bad things they were doing. They were thrown into a prison.

Moral: Don’t do bad things.
